The team behind our inservices E-mail

Gateways Education has a team of trainers who have extensive experience as classroom teachers and as facilitators of professional development programs. Each of the trainers has postgraduate qualifications in education, gifted education and psychology and over ten years of educational experience.

Bronwyn MacLeod
Bronwyn MacLeod has a Bachelor of Education from the University of Sydney, a Certificate of Gifted Education and a Master in Education from the University of New South Wales, and is currently undertaking a Ph.D program examining the use and benefit of online learning with gifted students. Her experience includes teaching in state and independent schools in Years K - 12, adult training, postgraduate lecturing and she is co-author of two educational texts on curriculum for gifted students published by GERRIC at UNSW: Gifted Student in Secondary Schools: Differentiating the Curraiculum and Gifted Students in Primary Schools: Differentiating the Curriculum and author of two differentiated units of work in the ‘Inspire'series. She has been a classroom teacher in both the primary and secondary schools for twenty years, and has also worked for the Department of Education writing and presenting Train the Trainer courses in both Science & Technology, and Design & Technology. Bronwyn is an educational consultant, working extensively in NSW, ACT, WA, Victoria and Queensland and also is one of hte Coordinators for the JASON Project in Australia and New Zealand.

Leslie Boon
Lesley Boon is a Teacher Librarian in a Jewish day school in Sydney, Australia. She has been teaching for many years and has been a librarian 18 of them. She has worked as a librarian in schools, universities and the NSW Health Department. As well as her teaching qualifications she gained a Masters of Arts in Information from the University of Technology in Sydney in 2000. She has taught at the University of New South Wales, GERRIC with gifted and talented students extrapolating the issues in Harry Potter with 5 and 6 year olds and mentoring 11 and 12 year olds in the writing of Science Fiction and Fantasy.
Lesley's passion is literature and passing that passion onto students of all ages. She is particularly interested in gifted and talented students, having raised two of her own and being involved in Gifted programs in the schools where she has taught.

Diana Drummond
Diana Drummond has been teaching for over ten years and has a Bachelor of Education from the University of Sydney. She has also completed the Certificate of Gifted Education at the University of New South Wales and has been the Gifted and Curriculum Coordinator at St Catherine's School, Waverley. Diana is a co-author of Gifted Students in Primary Schools: Differentiating the Curriculum, published by GERRIC at UNSW and is trained in the use of the Spalding technique and Emilio Reggio system in early childhood and primary schools. She has been a guest speaker at a number of education meetings and conferences, has been a regular teacher at GERRIC's Junior Scientia gifted student programs at UNSW, as well as a regular lecturer in the teacher inservice programs.  Diana is currently working part-time as a Kindergarten teacher in an Independent School in Sydney and consulting with schools and educational authorities in NSW and throughout Australia during the rest of her week.

Suzanne Floro
Sue Floro has 15 years teaching experience and is currently the Deputy Head of Junior School - curriculum at the K-12 school in which she works. An integral part of her role is the co-ordination of the Gifted programme at her school. She completed the Certificate of Gifted Education at UNSW and is currently completing a Masters degree in Gifted Education at UNSW. She was a contributing author for the GERRIC publication Gifted Students in Primary Schools: Differentiating the Curriculum. Sue presented a number of papers at the recently held World Conference of Gifted Education and has addressed parent groups on a range of issues relating to gifted children and their education. She has experience in a wide range of educational settings including schools from the independent sector and Catholic systemic schools. Sue has taught in co-educational and single sex boys and girls schools. Sue is also a qualified teacher and trainer for the JASON Expedition and has been involved with the Expedition in Australia since 1996.

Dr Cathie Harrison
Dr Cathie Harrison is an early childhood educator with more than twenty five years experience within early childhood education and related fields. Cathie has been the director of community based and government pre-schools in NSW and has had fourteen years experience as a lecturer in early childhood education at the University of Western Sydney [UWS], Bankstown Campus. Cathie has a Bachelor of Education in Early Childhood from Sydney University, a Master of Education (specializing in gifted education) from the University of NSW and a Doctorate of Education from UWS. Cathie is the author of the book Giftedness in Early Childhood first published in 1999 and recently published for the third time by Gifted Education, Research, Resource and Information Centre [GERRIC] at the University of NSW. Cathie frequently provides lectures for parenting programs organized by GERRIC. Cathie has been an Early Childhood Advisor to ABC Play School since 1999, and consultant to two museum projects ‘Kid's Island', an interactive play space for young children at The Australian Museum and ‘Children+water= fun', an interactive exhibition for children at The National Maritime Museum. Cathie is currently on leave from UWS and now offers a range of consultancy and professional development services to community organizations, government and business sectors and to early childhood educators and families. Her expertise is in the areas of early childhood education, play and learning environments, gifted education and children's television.

Kirrily Kuschert
Kirrily Kuschert has a Diploma of Teaching and a Bachelor of Education from the University of New South Wales in primary teaching. She has worked in a mobile army school, was Executive teacher/Assistant Principal in a very multicultural school running the K - 2 department and was seconded to  the Early Childhood faculty of the University of Western Sydney, updating students and staff with the latest curriculum changes and supervising student practicums. She also taught both Mathematics set courses and electives and Kirrily continues links with the University through both part time lecturing and practicum supervision. Kirrily became a DET K - 8 District consultant working with over 50 schools in Granville District in NSW and was also chosen to train over 30 New Zealand Mathematics delegates on behalf of the NSW DET. Kirrily was involved in the writing and development team of 'Inquizitive' - a Mathematics K - 6  book series for use in the classroom published by Pearson, has written and consulted for Mimosa Shortland Publications in their K - 6 teacher resources and is currently the K - 6 Manager of online learning for HOTmaths.com, a new Mathematical teaching and learning website. She has a deep interest in home based learning.

Lye Chan Long
Lye Chan has a Bachelor of Applied Sciences (App. Biology), Diploma of Education, Master of Education (specialising in Gifted Education), and is currently undertaking a PhD in Gifted Education at the University of New South Wales. She has been the Head of Science at St. George Christian School for 4 years; has taught Science and Biology for 14 years, and has marked HSC Biology and prepared students for the Biology Olympiad. Lye Chan was the Gifted and Talented Coordinator at St George Christian School for the last 10 years; and has worked with withdrawal groups and gifted individuals as well as having taught a gifted Science class. Lye Chan works regularly as a trainer at teacher in-services, and has been a lecturer at Junior Scientia, Small Poppies and APTS programs for GERRIC at the University of New South Wales. Lye Chan regularly lectures post-graduate students for the University of New South Wales and has been involved with the JASON Project for the last five years. Lye Chan currently resides in New Zealand and regularly returns to Australia to lecture and consult.

Aaron Seckold
Aaron Seckold is one of the coordinators of the JASON Expedition in Australia and New Zealand and conducts teacher workshops and technology professional development sessions in NSW, ACT, Queensland and Western Australia. He has been the main organizer of the JASON Expedition Student Event Days held at the University of New South Wales, developing and conducting programs for over 2 000 students each year. For the last three years, Aaron has also coordinated and lectured at the Australian National JASON Conference attended by education professionals from throughout Australia and New Zealand. 2007 will see the fourth of these conference programs to be held at the Australian Technology Park, Sydney in October. Aaron was awarded two Local Recognitions in the Young Australian of the Year Awards for service to the Arts and Community Services and with a dance and drama teaching background, he has a passion for choreography and all areas of the Creative and Practical Arts.

Ruth Targett
Ruth Targett has worked as a classroom teacher in Middle School and Secondary settings for ten years and has been involved in the field of gifted education for over eight years. She has her Master in Gifted Education and is currently undertaking study in the field of psychology. Ruth has presented many in-services in both public and independent schools on a variety of topics including curriculum differentiation, programming for differentiated curriculum, leadership issues, the social and emotional needs of gifted children, the characteristics of gifted children and how best to identify gifted children. She has also lectured in English method at the University of NSW at the undergraduate level. Ruth has presented seminars to parents; workshops at postgraduate level in gifted education, has worked as the gifted coordinator in a number of schools and is currently Head of Gifted Education at her school. She has worked with gifted children in a number of contexts including teaching in self-contained gifted classes, running residential programs for gifted high school children and developing mentor programs. Ruth is the author of Perspectives: an English differentiated unit for lower secondary students. 

Fiona Smith
Fiona has an Arts Degree with Honours in Psychology and a Masters of Education degree, specialising in Gifted Education. She has experience tutoring in Psychology at The University of Sydney and the University of New South Wales (UNSW) and has lectured in Gifted Education and in COGE (The Certificate of Gifted Education) at UNSW. Fiona worked as the Principal Psychologist at GERRIC (Gifted Education Research Resource and Information Centre), UNSW, for over 6 years. For the last 12 months she has also been working privately as a Consultant Psychologist. Since 1998 Fiona has assessed over 1200 children using the Wechsler and Stanford Binet tests of intellectual aptitude. Her main research interests include humour as an indication of high-level abstract reasoning, literature used as bibliotherapy for gifted children and adolescents and the sensitivities and intensities that accompany and complement intellectual giftedness. Fiona also presents at parenting workshops, conferences and schools. She is available for inservicing on the identification and assessment needs of gifted students from Preschool to High School and on appropriate affective curriculum.
